Bruegel’s Dream
Next Solo Exhibition by Nedret Andre
February 21 – March 13
Artist Statement
Bruegel’s Tower of Babel for me represents multiplicity; a tower that is incomplete, and a place where a monolithic culture does not exist with a single language. For me, Bruegel’s work symbolize a place where many social classes, languages, and cultures co-exist. My paintings pay homage both to Bruegel and Bakhtin’s ideas on Carnival and polyphony of voices.
My paintings depict space and time with an open narrative that does not belong to one culture or nation. My cross-cultural landscapes depict multiplicity with a montage of colors, patterns and strange looking 16th Century ships (Bruegel’s boats) that seem out of place. Each viewer will bring their own subjective experiences to the work for re-thinking a new type of landscape.
