September 2013 Group Exhibition
“Reflection of Nature”
Opening Reception; Sunday September 8th, 4–7 PM
Touch Art Gallery is pleased to present the September 2013 group exhibition showcasing 7 artists, including established gallery regulars and several newcomers to the gallery. Opening reception is September 8th form 4-7 PM. The exhibition will feature photography, with works by the following artists:
Annushka Muench
Annushka Munch is a self-taught photographer and recent graduate from Mount Holyoke College, where she double majored in cultural anthropology and Russian literature and culture. Anna began taking pictures seriously at age 19 when she was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. While some of her work continues to address issues such as her own mental health, most of Annushka’s photography is now focused on exploring social issues by bringing them to light through art.
Annushka Munch photography was started in 2011 when Anna began to sell prints to subsidize the cost of textbooks. In 2013 Annushka Munch had an exhibit in Blanchard Student Art Gallery at Mount Holyoke College. Annushka Munch Photography also received the Grinspoon Entrepreneurship Award for young entrepreneurs.”
David R Levitt
He spent his first career as a psychologist and his spare time in community organizing to improve his small part of the world. After retiring, he converted to photographer. “Self-taught”, though informed by his earlier studies in perception and cognition, he has been capturing images for over ten years. What he finds most interesting are semi-abstract images where context is removed, leaving pattern/color/texture that invite further viewing. He does share our common fondness for beauty but tries to select for interesting qualities as well.
His photographs has been shown in several venues — Danforth Museum of Art, Mount Auburn Hospital Art Show, Fresh Pond Art Show, Cambridge’s Out of the Blue Gallery, and Cambridge Open Studios events as well as being included in some private collections. On request, he has contributed a number of works to non-profit institutions through Boston’s juried Art Connection.
Eve Chayes Lyman
In a world that is tearing itself apart, becoming increasingly polarized and destructive, she has a deep-seated belief in the overarching transcendence of the human spirit and the threads that bind us all. In her work she seeks to strike the chords that resonate with our common humanity.
Seeker, explorer, student, activist, politico, Eve Chayes Lyman is a photographer and fine artist. Her photographs of Afghanistan have appeared in various shows and publications, both nationally and internationally. After September 11th, she felt compelled to become active in the unfolding events. She was a co-founder of Afghans for Civil Society, based in Kandahar, Afghanistan, which is where most of her Afghan photographs were taken. Afghanistan was the starting point of her career as a serious photographer. Since then she has focused on places as far flung as Guatemala and North Africa and as close to home as her kitchen or her own back yard for the subjects of her photography.
Her work has been published in newspapers and magazines including Canada’s Sunday Globe and Mail, Harvard Magazine and Marie Claire. Her work has been shown in the Boston and Denver area, and has been featured in exhibits sponsored by Art Without Borders, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Out of the Blue Gallery in Cambridge. She visited North Africa during the Arab Awakening of 2011, publishing a photo journal that received considerable recognition. Currently she is a full time student at The School of the museum of Fine Arts Boston (SMFA) where she is expanding her artistic expression to include painting, drawing, mixed media and encaustic.
Elke Blackstone
Elke Blackstone is a Portland, Maine native and a temporary resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts (16 years and counting). She combines original 35mm, Holga, and digital photography to create one-of-a-kind photographic collages. Her pieces are assembled by hand, using archival adhesive. All of her work (including most of the photography) is done under the watchful eye of her 16-year-old rescue chihuahua, Penelope (pronounced PEE-nah-lope). This is her first foray into visual art and her first gallery exhibition.
Linda Ruth Salter
Linda-Ruth Salter is a local painter and photographer. She began to paint in her early 20s while living in Nagasaki, Japan. There she had the good fortune to find an inspiring artist and “Sensei” who patiently began the long process of teaching her the art of the brush. What first drew her to sumi-e was its evocative simplicity. She was interested in being able to express truth through strength and grace.
In 2007, she was honored with the designation master of Sumi-Eby the New England School of Sumi-E. During past many years, she had exhibition in many galleries such as: The Mary Jo Rines Gallery at First Parish, Weston MA, Artist Crossing, Boston MA, Juried Show, Belmont Gallery of Art, Belmont MA, New Song Art Coop Group Shows. She is member of Sumi-E Society of America, Concord Art Association, and New Song Art Coop.
The September Group Photography Exhibition also will present two artists Louis Fiore and Susan Currie. The show will start by September first. Opening reception is September 8th form 4-7 PM. Please join us for the reception and meet the artists.
