“Meta”
Opening Reception; Friday October 11th, 5–9 PM
Touch Art Gallery is pleased to present “Meta” October 2013 group exhibition showcasing 3 artists, including established gallery regulars and several newcomers to the gallery. Opening reception is October 11th from 5-9 PM. The exhibition will feature painting, with works by the following artists: Daniel Kanaan, Marsha Hewitt and Sheila Rice.
Daniel Kanaan
He studied Neuroscience at Brown University and embarked on a career in Art in 1997 under the instruction of Jeffery Camp, RA. Under the instruction of Jeffery Camp, he began to draw intensively. Daniel continued working under Jeffery’s guidance until 2001. In that time he completed many large scale drawings and paintings and created the London Drawing Classes.
At that time, Daniel stopped painting and wrote a short novel, called Oakford’s Ramus. He then continued onto playwrighting, writing and producing a short comedy, Good Luck, and a King’s Cross Award short-listed drama Ambit and Twos. Although he was not actively producing completed works during that period, Daniel taught life drawing at London School of Economics. He also taught Photoshop for artists at Central St. Martins college of art.
Daniel returned to painting in 2004 and in 2006 produced a series of landscapes in France, leading to a Solo Exhibition in Nice, France, in August 2006. He then began attending print-making courses at Kensington and Chelsea College in January 2007, culminating in a a successful entry to Royal Academy Summer Show 2007 (Work number 243). Also during this time, he created the noShampoo movement, now a global movement, after creating the original noShampoo video
Daniel spent three years in Marseille, producing several landscapes and portraits. These he exhibited at the Marseille Project Gallery.
Marsha Hewitt
Marsha Hewitt is a versatile artist, who paints with wax-beeswax to be specific. In her work, she explores the sensuality, luminosity, transparency and texture of encaustic wax. Hewitt’s paintings are bold abstract studies that use vibrant colors, lots of movement and create a deep sense of space. In other mixed media works, she uses compelling graphic images including college, drawings, and her own writing and photography. The work is built up in layers of wax with as many as five layers in one area.
Sheila Rice
Sheila Rice, a native of Boston, MA, is a lifelong maker of art. She won a first in a children’s show when she was seven. Recently she won second prize in the 2011 Cambridge Art Association show, RED, juried by Howard Yezerski, who owns a gallery in Boston’s South End. Rice was classically trained in impressionism and realism. Since 1991, when she completed her training at the Boston Museum School, Rice has worked in the surrealist traditions of automatic drawing and painting and acrylic stain painting, creating nonobjective works of art which reflect her synesthesia, seeing colors when she hear sounds. She is also an experimental water media painter and print-maker.
The show started by October first. Opening reception is October 11th from 4-7 PM. Please join us for the reception and meet the artists.
