Touch Art Gallery is pleased to present, “A Musical Journey”, works on canvas by Menglei Sun February 4-16th. Please join us on Friday Feb. 7th, from 6-8 PM, for the exhibition and to meet the artist.
As a self-taught painter, Menglei Sun is a keen observer of the complexities of the daily life and also a detector of the varieties of emotions. While she is known for her abstract landscapes, her explorations of visual rhythms are experiments of her interest in how we perceive our deep emotions and represent them “musically” as much as possible. Accentuated curved lines and non-geometry shapes, as well as tiny marks, make lyrical composition and present alternative ways of seeing, forms within forms, and references to ways of “decoding” what lies underneath. This exhibition explores the possibilities of the relationship between color and emotions, as well as color and rhythm.
Born in North China, Sun studied Computer Applications at “such and such” University and “such and such” University, which is highly regarded in China. Neither proved to help her develop her artistic interests and talents. Then she discovered literature which helped her develop her personality and open a window of real world with charms of words. In late 2005, by chance, she started to teach herself painting on her third year in Shanghai, inspired by French modernistic masterpieces and German expressionism. The series on the show were finished (give the month and year) just three months before enrolling at the School of Museum of the Fine Arts, Boston.
The intensity of colors—saturated blue, spirited orange, burnt sienna—, insecurities among and the rhythm through colors, all these experiences bode well for a her signature style in the emerging stage of her career, and also for her future explorations.
